How Period Panties Can Help Teens Have A Better Menstruation Experience

Last updated on March 21, 2019 By Jing 2 Comments

In the past, the leak, the odor, and the accompanying discomfort, embarrassment and shame all created a negative menstrual experience for girls. But that’s changing…

period panties for teens

I can’t tell you how many pants I’ve ruined from leaking menstrual blood, let alone the embarrassment of staining someone’s couch or the chairs at school when I was a teen.

When I was younger, I was extremely nervous about moving around during my period. The fear of leaking was constantly on my mind – and it showed on my pants as well.

During the first three days, when my flow was heaviest, I couldn’t sleep at night with the same worry. Even when I doubled up with night pads in my underwear, I still often managed to stain the sheets. I remember secretly washing them in the bathroom, afraid of being seen by my dad or my brother.

You may have had similar experiences during your youth – or even now. Leaking is a big problem, especially for young girls.

Menstruation Has Been a Mostly Negative Experience for Girls

Recently I watched a Netflix documentary called “Period. End of Sentence.” It was about village girls in India who don’t have menstrual pads. When their periods come, they skip school due to the fear of leaking and the embarrassments that comes with it.

During the day they stay at home using cloths to absorb their menstrual blood.  And at night they walk a long way to these empty fields outside their villages to discard the dirty cloths, so they won’t be seen by others.

Eventually someone taught them how to make their own pads. The pads they manufacture are a pretty rudimentary affair – but life changing nonetheless!

Period Panties Help Teens Have a Better Menstruation Experience

Thankfully, our feminine products are fairly advanced, and we don’t have to hide out in our bedrooms or take long walks in the dead of night during menstruation. The possibility of leaking, however, still brings fear, embarrassment and shame for young girls in our modern society.

But fear no more. I recently came across Knixteen period underwear, which is changing how girls experience menstruation in important ways…

Because their underwear is leak proof.

These period panties for teens can hold 2-3 teaspoons of moisture (about 2 tampons worth of blood), which provides ample backup support when a tampon, pad or menstrual cup just isn’t enough.

They’re comfortable.

Knixteen’s quick-drying and moisture-wicking technology helps absorb sweat and odor as well, keeping you feel clean and fresh. Many who have used these teen period panties say they feel drier than with regular disposable pads.

They’re seamless.

Wearing menstrual pads can make you feel bulky and unattractive, especially when you wear jeans, leggings, or figure-hugging dresses. Knixteen’s period underwear is super thin and seamless, which makes underwear lines a thing of the past.

And though these seamless period panties are made in junior sizes to fit teens’ bodies, Knixteen offers an adult line called Knix as well – which is good news for adult women who want the same benefits.

They’re safe.

The body of Knixteen’s period panties for teens is made from 77% nylon and 23% LYCRA®, while the gusset liner (the piece of fabric between your legs) is made from 86% cotton, 10% spandex, and 4% carbon. So they are 100% hygienic – and safe for the most sensitive parts of your body.

They’re easy to clean.

Just toss them in the wash with the rest of your clothes and hang to dry! Don’t worry about blood getting on your other clothes in the wash, they’ll just be fine. But if you prefer, give your period panties a quick rinse in the sink before you throw them in the wash.

In the past, the leak, the odor, and the accompanying discomfort, embarrassment and shame all created a negative menstrual experience for girls. But imagine what a life-changer it would be to take these out of the equation. Knixteen has.

And with a more positive experience with menstruation, girls will grow into women who are more comfortable and confident in their female bodies – and more empowered to harness their wisdom and power as women.

I wish I’d had this leak-proof underwear when I was growing up. But I’m glad they’re available for girls now. And I hope this kind of innovation will keep reshaping women’s menstrual experiences. Perhaps one day, the taboo of menstruation will also become a thing of the past, long forgotten.
