Occasionally I find myself feeling stressed, agitated, depressed or restless. And when I pause for a moment and listen to my own breath, I notice that my breathing is shallow and irregular, as if the flow of life has slowed within me…
I’m not letting go of the old breath, nor am I taking in a new breath. It feels like I’m stuck in a filthy, stagnated, algae-filled pool of water.
Often this awareness alone causes me to take in a deep breath, automatically…
When it does, I allow myself to focus on my breathing for a few minutes, breathing in and breathing out – steady, strong, affirming – and I can feel the stagnant water begin to move again in my body. My mind gets clearer, my body more relaxed.
And life is again flowing through me…
Some wise old sage once said that breathing is our connection to God. To me, breathing is also our connection to ourselves – our body, mind and spirit.
When our body, mind, and spirit are in harmony, we are happy and content. And conscious breathing is a simple and effective way to achieve the harmony and happiness we so desire.
Many of us are accustomed to looking for solutions and happiness outside of ourselves. But more often than not, the treasure we’re looking for lies within us –right here, right now, within our control, and without our reach.
It’s our own breathing…
Try to check in with yourself from time to time, and pay attention to how you breathe. Are your breaths shallow and irregular? Or are they long, deep, slow and smooth…
When you learn to regulate your breathing, you are mastering your life…
I’m working on it. How about you?
