Holidays are notorious for making us second-guess our breakups. They are a time for family and friends to get together and make more memories. So how do you survive holiday gatherings if you have just broken up? Why not channel the goddess Persephone to help you?
Persephone was a virginal maiden who became the queen of darkness after she was taken to the underworld by Hades during a surprise wedding. Her mother, Demeter, went to Zeus and asked for help. In short, Persephone had to eat a pomegranate and Hades had to agree to let her go for half the year. Although Persephone is usually celebrated in the spring, to represent her maiden status, she is perfect to call on when breaking off old relationships.
You can invite Persephone into your life in many ways: By recognizing any areas you are turning a blind eye to in your relationships, making sure your habits all contribute to a healthy relationship, or taking notice of any patterns in past relationships that you are repeating in this one that caused you to fail. Then you can move on and make a clean break after notifying these hidden pieces that might still be causing hurt.
You might also want to perform some ritual to draw good things toward you, to help you heal and move on, or to cleanse your space of old energies so you can move on. The trick is to release and renew, so you can welcome new positive things into your life without any excess baggage.
In order to channel Persephone, you might want to incorporate a pomegranate into your ritual. You can picture a new love tasting juicy and sweet or you can internalize Persephone’s strength as you eat the fruit. Either way, the ritual is supposed to nourish you and feed your internal drive for progress and renewal.
Most importantly, celebrate the magic of the holidays by cherishing all the beautiful things you do have. Loving family, loyal friends, or any sort of feeling of abundance that may fill your heart are great reasons to enjoy the present moment, date or no date.
If you think you’ll be missing someone this holiday season, don’t focus on the loss, but focus on the strength and support you know you have and make the changes you need to make to help you grow and flourish.
