Time for a Big Exhale

Last updated on March 23, 2018 By Jing J. 4 Comments

Do you sometimes feel tightness in your body, and in your mind? When your world seems to tighten up and close in around you? This morning I started to have this familiar feeling…

I get it when I become too attached to my goals. It comes when I work crazy hours, ignoring my body’s signals. I first noticed this feeling a couple of months ago when I was trying to ace my final exams.

Then there was a big exhale. I went to Peru and had one of the most amazing adventures of my life. There the world seemed to expand around me, with renewed inspiration, deeper insight, and boundless possibilities…

It felt nice. And I felt alive.

Since then I’ve been driven to implement my new visions, and I’ve worked long and hard. As a result, my body tightened up again, and so did my mind.

When there is tightness, there is no movement. The old cannot go out, and the new cannot come in. The flow of life is stagnated.

There is irritability, anxiety, and a feeing of uneasiness. And there is PMS.

Just as we have to exhale after each inhale, when we notice a feeling of tightness in our body, in our relationship, or in our outlook on life, we need to take a moment and exhale – allowing the tightness to dissolve and the freshness, softness, and sweetness to flow in…

Then there is room again, room for the flow of life, and the flow of joy.

So I called up my girlfriend. And we’re going to have a yummy Chinese foot massage at the end of the day today. I’m about to exhale…

How about you?

My tightness is a problem I have been working on for a long time. I think from tightness of the muscles develops a lot of health problems, physical and mental. The more we can practice relaxation of any form such as meditation, massage, singing, dancing, swimming… as more we help our body to stay in good shape. It was an interesting experience!

It’s so true when we are in a relaxed state, things flow effortlessly, often without excessive efforts on our part. Our mind often thinks that we need to exert force to make something happen. It’s to the contrary. We just need to remind ourselves of this simple wisdom on a daily basis. Allowing, not forcing. Focused, but relaxed…
