I menstruated around the full moon. And what a powerful harvest moon it was. I was thrown off-balance by waves of overwhelming emotions – sadness and anger that I hadn’t experienced for quite a while.
Underneath these intense emotions, I also felt a deep yearning – yearning for something that I could not quite articulate or put my hands upon.
I wonder if you feel a similar yearning around the time you menstruate.
Cycle after cycle, at the time of menstruation, an inner voice always pushes me to dive deeper to get in touch with aspects of my soul – my needs, desires, or insecurities.
My natural tendency is to fight it. “I don’t like this at all. I want to feel inspired, get moving, and just have a good time,” I tell myself.
It’s taken me a long time to learn that there is really no need to resist or fight against the flow of currents. In fact it’s not only pointless, but it also makes things more difficult – for myself and those around me.
It’s the winter, baby!
The dark hours and cold temperatures of the winter strip away any excess from the long period of abundance, and bring everything back to the bare minimum.
Just like menstruation. The menstrual blood cleanses the womb of dead cells and leaves it ready to begin its fertile cycle again.
It’s a period of rest and restoration, letting go of the old and preparing for the new – new ideas, new visions, and the new self.
The spring will follow, then the summer, the fall, and finally back to the winter again. This is a natural order in the universe, whether we’re aware or it or not, whether we like it or not.
As women, we are blessed with a precious opportunity to learn about the natural law of harmony every month, through our menstrual cycles.
If we can learn to ride with the ebbs and flows of our menstrual cycles, and the physical and emotional changes that come with them, we can learn the secrets of life, and the laws of the universe.
I’ve always had a feeling that our menstrual cycles hold the key to feminine enlightenment. I now know why…
In my next post, I’ll discuss the five phases of a menstrual cycle and how to live in harmony with it.
