The moon is full again. And tonight’s moon is special. Because it’s 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons this year, it’s called a “super moon.” I wonder if you’ve felt its powerful effect on your body and your mind? I surely have.
In the past few days leading to the full moon, I’ve been feeling tension within my body and restlessness in my mind. I wanted to shout out loud, throw punches at a heavy bag (the kind boxers use), run like a wild horse – anything to release this intensely charged force inside of me.
Even though it’s manifested as discomfort and anxiousness, I know from experience that it’s the creating force within me that’s been seeking expression.
There are a few things I’ve learned on how to transform this energy and use it for creative expression. Now I’m sharing them with you…
1. Sit with your struggle.
This is what my art teacher once told me when I was struggling with my painting. I’ve come to appreciate her words of wisdom again and again, whenever I feel frustrated or uninspired working on a project – whether it’s writing, painting, or something else.
When I sit with my struggle, allowing the creative energy to lead me and move through me, magic often happens. In the end I’m always glad I didn’t simply run away from it.
2. Express yourself without inhibition.
Last night Dean and I walked to one of our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. On our walk home, I was so taken by the magnificent moon that I couldn’t help singing out loud one of my favorite Chinese moon poems. It felt absolutely wonderful to express myself uninhibitedly!
3. Celebrate.
Having danced under the full moon and celebrated around bonfires, I know the power of celebration, especially when it’s shared with others. In our society, we simply don’t celebrate enough. I really miss the powerful connection and oneness I’ve always felt when celebrating with others, especially in nature. As I’m writing this, I’m reminded to make celebration a part of my daily life!
4. Tap into your inner wisdom through journaling.
Writing down your thoughts and feelings without censoring them is a great way to get to know yourself, and tap into your inner wisdom. It’s helped me to release things that were troubling me, process my emotions, and gain clarity and insight. I also find it helpful to turn on my favorite music, writing in a state of trance and letting my subconscious mind guides me wherever I need to go.
5. Spend some time in solitude.
In my experience, solitude is just as important, powerful and necessary as celebration. Solitude gives you time and space to connect with your spirit and receive your inner guidance. I love going for a moon hike, meditating, or taking a quiet walk in nature.
What are some of the ways you use to tap into your creative power? And what’s your plan tonight to celebrate the magnificent super moon? Please leave a comment and share with us.
its a great article. Thank You Jing! I agree with you on making celebration a part of the daily life. I light the candles every morning and every night when I pray and meditate and in a way I celebrate my earthly existence… Would be great to find more ways through out the day
Thank you for sharing Anna! Lighting a candle or a stick of incense is a simple way to honor our daily life. I light a scented lavender candle when I write too. It seems to inspire me and get me into the mood 🙂
